Snow Clearing Regulations

Home ownership is a huge responsibility, not just within your own home but in the winter, your surrounding property area as well. Below are some reminders regarding snow clearing regulations in the Greater Toronto Area.

In the GTA, property owners must clear snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property (and driveways/paths) within 12-24 hours after a snowfall ends, or face fines, with Toronto requiring clearance within 12 hours; it's also illegal to push snow onto the street, and clearing around vents/hydrants is crucial, with city services available for those in need.

Key Regulations & Responsibilities:

  • Sidewalks: Clear snow and ice from public sidewalks next to your property within 12 hours (Toronto) or 12-24 hours (other GTA areas) after the snow stops falling.

  • Driveways/Private Paths: Clear snow from your driveways, parking areas, and ramps for safe access.

  • Do Not Throw Snow on Streets: It is illegal to push snow from your property onto roads, sidewalks, or bikeways; this can lead to fines.

  • Ventilation & Hydrants: Ensure dryer/furnace vents are clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide risk, and maintain a 1.2-meter radius around fire hydrants.

  • Landlords: Landlords are responsible for clearing common areas in multi-family buildings under the Residential Tenancies Act.

Penalties & Assistance:

  • Fines: Failure to comply can result in significant fines, potentially over $500 in Toronto, plus surcharges.

  • Free Service: The City of Toronto offers a free sidewalk clearing service for eligible seniors and people with disabilities.

Reporting Issues:

  • Report uncleared sidewalks or large windrows by calling 311 or using the city's website/app.

City Operations:

  • The City prioritizes clearing major roads, transit routes, and sidewalks, using a phased approach.

  • You can track plowing at toronto.ca/plowTO but snow removal services aren't tracked there
